The mission of CommonWealth Kitchen (CWK) is to build a just, equitable, resilient regional economy. It builds viable food-based businesses as a means to generate assets and wealth, creates sustainable employment and addresses Boston’s growing wealth divide. To accomplish this work, CWK operates Greater Boston’s only nonprofit food business incubator and food manufacturing social venture. The Critical Issue Fund will help to support CWK’s Food Waste Reduction and Recovery Initiative. CWK is poised to develop a viable business model that leverages its on-demand manufacturing expertise to process post-harvest surplus produce into value-added products for institutional and foodservice markets. This effort will provide in-time processing of surplus from farms, gleaning groups, food rescue operations, and distributors. It will build a reliable sales channel with institutional and foodservice markets, including colleges, hospitals and public schools.
