A new report shows that childhood hunger in North Philadelphia more than tripled between 2006 and 2016. These findings were part of research conducted by past Claneil Proactive Grant recipient Dr. Mariana Chilton, director of the Center for Hunger Free Communities.
In the 9/18/17 Philadelphia Inquirer article highlighting the research, Dr. Chilton said: “The trend looks terrible for working families. You can’t be working class in North Philadelphia and thrive.”
The article states: “According to Chilton’s research, the food insecurity rate for children in North Philadelphia rose from 3.1 percent in 2006…to 9.7 percent in 2016.”
The Center for Hunger Free Communities is housed in Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health. It conducts research as the Philadelphia site of Children’s Health Watch, which is based in Boston and is also a past Claneil grantee.
